First Meeting
Their first meeting dates back to their 1st years. Despite being in the same class and sitting right next to each other, they rarely have conversed - only small talk on Yuki's side. Natsume and Yuki, although with the same level of wits, tacles and maintains their academics in rather different methods.Natsume presents himself as cool, yet distance and mysterious. He oftens skips class, indulging in personal hobbies that interests him in the Underground Library's Secret Room while still being able to maintain his grades and easily pass, while honing his skills in magic and fortunetelling at the same time. Whereas Yuki is rather more hardworking and participates in class activities and school events. Aside from being the class representative of Class 1-A, Yuki has a good relationship with her classmates and juniors and seniors from different grades, including teachers who often asks her for assistance on different things. As time passes by when Eichi Tenshouin devices his plan to get to rejuvenate and bring idol students of Yumenosaki out of their slump state, Natsume, alongside the other Five Eccentrics (Wataru Hibiki, Rei Sakuma, Kanata Shinkai, and Shu Itsuki), were used as a scapegoat and were the main source of blame for what the school has become.
Although being shut away from his peers most of the time, the war and being an Eccentric does not help the fact that he was more alienated by his peers. Being the youngest of the Five Eccentrics, Natsume was also one of the targets of bullying. However, not as harsh as the other Five Eccentrics, who shielded and protected him, but was still affected heavily. These "Five Eccentrics" was a topic that was overly discussed among students, to the point where words reached faculty as well. Yuki, when helping Jin Sagami who was substituting their class, was asked about Natsume's whereabouts.
Yuki did acknowledge that Natsume sits to her right at the front row seat, though his desk tends to be empty due to him not attending class often. Another thing she acknowledges was, Yumenosaki itself deteriorating, she could feel it. Jin told Yuki to try and "look out for your classmate at a time like this", indicating he knew more about what was going on.
Either way, she agreed and was persistent on looking out for him, often taking notes and keeping ahead of anything important in class the next time she sees Natsume. While one day on library duty, Yuki finally spotted Natsume at last. She was happy due to her wanting to talk to him for a long time, but he was already heading somewhere else. Not being able to yell out his name due to being in the library, Yuki ended up walking really fast to catch up to him, down to the underground of the library archives, until having no idea which direction she was heading to. However, the determination did not leave her because she wanted to "be a good class rep", as encouraged by Jin, and so Yuki persisted until she entered a strange place that 'seemed like it doesn't belong in a library archive.'
Natsume, upon spotting her questioned why and what she was here, attempting to cast a spell on her. Yuki was moved to tears, assuming that it was in a manner that he was mad and upset for her intruding his space. To Natsume's confusion, shortly after realized that he might've had come off as aggressive and awkwardly apologized. Yuki reassured him that she was just cautious, followed by a tease from Natsume saying that cautious people don't tear up every time, which made her laugh and slightly eased the tension between them a bit, to which confuses Natsume due to how quickly her mood changes and was having fun with him.Although curious about the various lab materials, and Natsume noted that Yuki indeed did had taken a notice on them, did not get a chance to explain what they were to her.
After a short while, Yuki asked if something was wrong and if he needed someone to talk to— not exactly cutting to the chase about other things to not burden Natsume further than he seemed like he already is by the whole Five Eccentrics thing. Natsume was rather surprised by this sudden question, he felt strange when being asked how he felt, so instead he bluntly told her it's none of her business, to which she respectfully told him she understood and asked if he wanted to be left alone.Their interactions does not end there however, as they do tend to make little small talk from time to time. Yuki does greet Natsume when they see each other in the hallway, but he felt as if she is out of his league, due to being popular and friendly she is among their other peers, with that fact creating a gap between them.
In Natsume’s eyes, he thinks of his reputation as an Eccentric, who were the scapegoat and the ones to blame for the school’s downfall, and her reputation as an honor student, who looks after everyone and is loved by everyone around her, would not look good. On the other hand, Yuki does think about him often, but was still under the impression that he does not like her due to their differences and assumes that he thinks she's bothersome ever since that day of entering his lab.War Era
While circumstances arises and Eichi, as well as Keito Hasumi behind the scenes, having plans to revitalize the school itself. Although not being a part of any unit, Yuki is not particularly interested in the idol course itself. She simply joined for the sake of her childhood friends, Ayame Uehara and Arata Shirase, after realizing they both were also enrolled in Yumenosaki after moving to another city. However, they have never been the same ever since their friend group’s separation since middle school, after Yuki left, along with their other childhood friend Haruka Durand, who left shortly after and is temporarily overseas.
As much as Yuki attempts to bring the two together, such as small talk or forced interactions, it never seemed to work at all.At the time being, Arata was a part of the unit Chess (formerly Backgammon and Othello) whereas Ayame was training for a solo debut. However, after Eichi reformed the unit system, which limits to a 2-5 member cap, Ayame’s solo debut proposal was rejected, whereas Chess eventually split up into various offshoot units which are then named after different chess pieces.
Notably Knights being one of them as formed by Izumi Sena and Leo Tsukinaga. Arata however, was left to his own accord. Even during the event of Duel, much to his disappointment, has been the only one of his offshoot units in ‘King’ to show up, with his former unit members slacking off and ditching the Duel. This event eventually led to Arata’s consideration of rebranding his own unit. Arata, to Yuki’s surprise, then invited her to join King with him and his other friend circle. He had an idea in mind in bringing her in to pursue his goals in defeating other Chess offshoot units and rubbing it in their faces if King defeats them again.
Yuki was reluctant at first, telling him that it wouldn’t be fitting for a girl to be in a unit called ‘King’, to which he insisted it did not matter. Arata told Yuki that he’s been considering signing up for the B1 Live. With that being the case, Yuki brought up Ayame, and insisted on forming a subunit between just the three of them instead, similar to old times when Yuki, Haruka, Ayame and Arata were together—that they could rebrand their old band, Kiseki HERO. However, Arata awkwardly objected, revealing that he and Ayame has stopped talking and drifted apart once Yuki and Haruka moved during middle school.Yuki accepted Arata’s request and became a member of King, with Arata being the leader. Then, later behind his back trying to confront Ayame about it. Yuki was doubtful about the whole distance about the two, still having the inability to move on from the fact that everyone else has progressed forward with their lives, as Kiseki HERO was nothing but a “child’s play”, formed by a group of elementary kids who just wanted to be cool and bonded over the same interests temporarily. was still setting up Ayame and Arata up together with the three of them, under the false pretense of special occasions or studying sessions, only for it to be extremely awkward every time she brings up and reminisce of their old days.
However, sometimes when asked to hangout, Ayame often brings up the fact that her other friends has already asked. For Ayame, who has became more independent and starting having new groups of friends, felt absolutely alienated from Yuki’s obsession with the past. Arata on the other hand, was still loyal to King and felt the need to prove himself by leading them. The war was starting to take a toll on everyone. Yuki then, for unspecified reasons, stopped showing up to school, which eventually lead to King missing another member and inadequate to perform or practice. Her disappearance caused confusion among King, so much so that it did frustrates Arata about what will become of the unit in the future and whether they’d make the B1 Live a success or not.As Natsume attends classes, he felt more and more alienated. What was strange was the fact that Yuki wasn’t showing up anymore, to whom doesn’t really seem to be the type to miss out on class, with the seat next to him being empty. The war has affected many people, including Yumenosaki and its students, some even resorting into more drastic measures to handle the aftermath. That fact alone made Natsume anxious and peculiarly worried about Yuki, starting to blame himself for being an Eccentric to begin with. He was frustrated about the fact that with the other Eccentrics protecting him, he wasn’t able to protect them back, nor the people he cares about, not especially when Yuki was looking and searching for him in spite of everything. This was something Natsume acknowledged was quite uncharacteristic of him, caring about someone let alone a girl, though he was still waiting and looking forward for Yuki to finally come back to class more than he like to admit. However, a week later, much to Natsume’s relief, Yuki was able to return back to school, mainly due to her mandatory attendance. In Natsume’s eyes, Yuki was still always bright and kind, something that he refused to admit he craves for in a person. Thus, upon her return back to school made him happier and more relieved, in spite of what’s going on around him, or how much other people resents him and the Five Eccentrics as a whole. When asking where she has been for the whole week, Yuki cheerfully told him that she was sick, to which he found it hard to believe that someone has been sick for that long. Natsume wanted to ask more, but knowing her, he thinks that it would take a lot to break through her upbeat facade. At the meantime, the determination did not leave Yuki as her return made her persistent. Despite looking like she has gotten everything settled and together, Yuki’s desire to have her childhood friends reunite together in harmony was strong— she resents the idea of Ayame’s friends, as well as King potentially taking both Ayame and Arata away, and making them forget “all the special things nobody else gets”, even if that means lying and tricking the both of them before Haruka could come back from America, Yuki was willing to.After having a deeper talk and truly connecting with Ayame again, Ayame revealed that she wanted to debut solo and was in the process of being able to successfully doing so, only for the unit system to be changed, making her consider joining her new friends in on their unit. Yuki already knew this, was hurt to hear it from Ayame herself, and that she did not consider turning to her and Arata first, but did not let it show. Without outright criticizing her friend group, Yuki still compared them to their old friend group, subtly mentioning about how the three of them knew Ayame better, subconsciously making Ayame contemplate on things more. This fuels the chances of Ayame being convinced more when members of King were starting to have formed disagreements, prompting one of the members to leave. Leaving it out to be Arata and Yuki, and two other. Yuki simply took this an opportunity to convince Arata that they wouldn’t be able to “outdo” the other Chess offshoot units if this keeps going, however, Arata was still insistent on four members of the unit being able to work out. All of a sudden, Yuki then took the opportunity and brought up how Ayame intended to debut solo but wasn’t able to due to the new rules.
This suddenly made Arata feel bad, but still considered the awkward tension between him and Ayame that Yuki probably did not know of. However, due to their quite long discussions about Ayame, two of the other senior members in King knew of Ayame’s name, as well her older brother, who is also a successful idol and pressured Arata into letting her join. Arata begs to differ, saying how already having a girl in defeats the purpose of the unit being called “King”. Due to how unorganized students were during the war, and how unseriously the other two members took it, they told him it did not matter, as the means justifies the ends— for them to get over with it and graduate properly by just having a big name in their unit.Arata was still reluctant on letting Ayame joins, due to his doubts about her skills. However, by the insistence of the senior members in King caused him to give into them. Yuki noticed Arata’s weak spots for the seniors, Arata believed that approval from people older than him would mean he’s doing something right.
Yuki calls Ayame to meet up after school to discuss the matter, telling her about how the members are interested in her joining, as well as Arata agreeing, with a promise of Yuki to try to talk the both of them out. Ayame was still reluctant, her mind still torn between her new friend group and being with Yuki and Arata, realizing how insistent Yuki was into bringing her back in their lives. Yuki told Ayame to give their unit a shot, bringing up that they are about to compete in the B1 Live, to which has been something Ayame has always been keen on doing, finally having her agree. The tensions were still awkward, the routines still needed to be readjusted, but Ayame was able to fill in the five member gap.Just from the news of Haruka coming back to Japan in about the next two weeks, Yuki was worried that he would have a spot and felt left out. In her mind, she never really liked the other two members, despite how much respect Arata has for them. Her heart was set on Ayame and Arata, as well as Haruka joining in two weeks later in her vision. It was simply clear that the aforementioned seniors joined Chess simply for its namesake and does not value Arata’s efforts. On the other hand, they had selfish motives and wanted Ayame there due to her older brother’s name as an idol, to which if she had found out, would cause Ayame to ultimately resent them for the comparison due to her competitive nature.
A month away from the B1 Live, everyone started practicing as well as their preparations as a group. Yuki tries to pressure Ayame and Arata by exaggerating how much fun the idol unit is, being together and still constantly bringing up their shared past, while Ayame pours everything in into the B1 Live.Arata, who wanted to impress the seniors, has asked Yuki and Ayame to help assign and setup the choreography for the whole unit. Yuki took this chance upon herself and assigned nearly impossible roles for the seniors—with that, in combination with their laziness after effects from the war, they were unable to successfully do it, much to Arata’s disappointment, who looked up to them so much felt as if his expectations for them are crushed.
With the B1 Live drawing near and choreography and tasks being unable to be properly done, the two seniors started blaming Arata - to which he did not take Yuki or Ayame’s assessments into consideration and was fed up as well. In the end, Arata ended up frustrated, thinking the seniors aren’t take it as seriously— in the end, it did not go as Yuki planned. The two seniors left King, thus Arata calling to disband the unit once and for all.
The two seniors willingly left the practice room, whereas Yuki had asked the two of them to stay, telling them that they still have time, since everyone wanted to compete in the B1 Live so badly, even if it’s just the three of them for the timebeing. Yuki kept talking nonstop about their past bonds in elementary and middle school, how everyone in Kiseki HERO was inseparable. Ayame remarked that she has never had fun once, among all the bickering and how left out she felt.
Arata said that there was no use, and remarking how childish their old group sounded, ultimately making Yuki taken aback. Due to how betrayed he felt, almost as if it was mostly the choreography and routines that he asked the help of Yuki and Ayame, and started blaming the two of them, with their plans being cancelled once and for all.Natsume, who sat next to Yuki, notices her often unfocused behavior in class, often zoning out as well as her academic performance not as striving as before. Natsume asked what was wrong, and even teased her about it, only to be met with a fake, cheerful respond that everything was okay, which rubbed Natsume the wrong way.
The occurrence was unusual, thinking she had a bad day, and yet most of the time Yuki had been acting strange ever since. Natsume prompted Yuki to talk, only to be turned down by the minute and Yuki deflecting it back to make it all about him, which was something Natsume finds endearingly stubborn. With days on end to their interactions in class as Yuki began showing up regularly, she began talking to him more, with Natsume being her seatmate. Although they were seatmates before, they never get the chance to talk, as Natsume was constantly skipping class, and sometimes Yuki having her peers ask for help often. They began talking more, as their interactions day by day distracting the stress on the others’s end.Seeing Yuki’s interactions with Natsume, boys from their class, as well as some seniors of Yumenosaki began telling Yuki off about talking to Natsume and the Five Eccentrics. Although she was aware of the rumors of the Eccentrics being ‘the ones that tarnished Yumenosaki’s reputation’, Yuki did not believe it until she sees proof, and there was no definitive proof to begin with.Yuki was starting to understand more and more about this war, thinking as if they were wrongfully blamed. With a slight hesitation at first, Yuki told Natsume that no matter what happens, she will be on his side. Yuki remarked that Natsume is a kind and thoughtful person more than he realize, this confuses Natsume, as to which lead her to hold his hand and laughing it off.Upon the return of Haruka about two weeks after, Yuki was initially able to convince Haruka to enroll into Yumenosaki once he has returned back to America, due to his family situation. As Haruka enrolled in during the mid semester. Yuki stuck by his side, telling all the different tales in the school, as well as bringing up the fact that Ayame and Arata are in the same school, exaggerating how much fun they truly are having, which eases Haruka’s anxiousness about his difficulty in making friends. Yuki constantly talked about how it’s such a miracle that they were all in the same school again. Albeit different classes, they could still eat lunch and hangout together. However, Haruka felt as if there were more things happening more than Yuki lets on, though he did not know how to address that.A week in into Haruka settling into Yumenosaki, Yuki was still unable to move on from Ayame and Arata.Meanwhile, with the eventual executions of the Eccentrics, followed by the final one orchestrated by the former fine on Wataru. Natsume's plan, which consisted of his ideas of the Eccentrics together in order to defeat fine, was turned down by Wataru and leading to his execution.
All that’s left of the remaining of the Five Oddballs was Natsume himself.Post War
With the news of the Five Oddballs being defeats by the great fine, which was praised by the majority of the school, causes Natsume to isolate himself more. With Natsume’s desires for the Five Oddballs to turn to nothing but a pipe dream, he was ready to give it up and let go, however, his grudge for the ones who orchestrated them was still there. At a time like this, most of Yumenosaki started thriving again, however, it was never going well for anybody— Yuki, Ayame, Arata, or even Haruka, who has been left out in the dark. Three weeks remained until the B1 Live, King’s name has yet to be removed from the setlist.Yuki, who has yet to give up with her childhood friends’s reconcilation, invited them over in a cafe afterschool, disguising it as a reunion for Haruka’s return. Ayame and Arata were coerced into attending, which eventually lead to awkwardness in the meetup. With the breaking up of the unit and the loss of trust from his seniors, Arata was still visibly hurt. Ayame on the other hand, started getting suspicious of Yuki, as much as she didn’t want to.
She held a bit of sympathy for Arata, and started confronting Yuki in private, excusing the both of them. It was then emotions boils over and Yuki’s schemes came to light; admitting that it was her and mainly her who made the seniors leaving, with Ayame having nothing to do with it - confessing that she just wanted all her friends to be together again. Ayame gave Yuki her understanding, but also explained how replacing others and forcing the past isn’t fair. Yuki apologized in tears, admitting that it was her fault for being so obsessed with the past, but it’s mainly because she loves everyone a lot and is really afraid of losing them all, to which Ayame felt a pang of guilt and nostalgia in her heart. It made her remember how insistent Yuki has always been in bringing everyone together, even when they were kids, making her want to set things right again for everyone else too– finally understanding Yuki’s desperation. Ayame then promised to talk to Arata about it for her, so long as she explains her actions.Ayame and Yuki went back into the cafe, calling both Haruka and Arata outside and to talk outside instead. Yuki came clean, telling everyone about how much she fears about losing them. She thanked Haruka for coming despite being so lost and left out of the loop, but for sticking with everyone still. Haruka seemed to start to understand, and felt like it was his fault for distancing himself from Ayame and Arata after Yuki, who was his best friend left. He called himself a coward for no longer taking the initiatives in friendships ever again, which was the loneliness and his fear of getting attached that drifted them all apart. Arata on the other hand, understood and wanted to fix everything again.
Yuki proposed that it isn’t too late to participate in the B1 Live, that they could still start over again. The next day, in the practice room, the four of them gathered together. They all tried to think of their unit name together again, with Kiseki HERO (lit. Miracle HERO) being out of the question – since they’ve grown out of the phase where they like superheroes, as well as RYUSEITAI already being a hero themed unit.Ayame blurted out Kiseki-iro (奇跡色 lit. Miracle color), which essentially sounded like a play on words. Haruka suggested making use of the “色 (iro)” part, or even “color” in English. Yuki then suggested that she wanted to keep the word Kiseki, because she felt like it was an essential part of their friendship. Arata then translated them in English, “Miracle” and “Color”, to which Yuki combined the two for fun as “Miracolor” to which everyone liked. Ayame suggested adding an ‘S’ to indicate all of their individual ‘colors’ together. The day passes by as everyone was able to finally agree to everything again, as well as have been able to reflect about their times together again in the practice room.In Elements when Yuki got out of the room and looked outside, Natsume spotted her and greeted greet her. He wondered why she looked incredibly happy and asked, to which she was finally able to tell Natsume that it was because her friends are finally okay and together as well.
However, when she realized that Natsume was smiling for her, she started tearing up. In a panic, Natsume was confused on why she was crying all of the sudden. She simply admitted that saying that must’ve hurted him because she just remembered that the Five Eccentrics recently has fallen apart, and she shouldn’t be celebrating now.Natsume laughed bitterly, to which he teased her for worrying too much. He held her hand and told her that sometimes dreams can’t always go the way you want, and he was ready to accept that. With Yuki on the other hand, being able to be persistent enough and overcoming it herself. Yuki was still sorry about what happened between the Five Eccentrics and fine, but that she would still be by his side still.
